Old friends. A park bench. Amsterdam. A joint. Awkward chemistry. What could go wrong?
Reunión was made in 2015, almost on a dare when my friend Martin had two amazing Argentinean actors, Natalia and Fernando, couch-surfing in his Amsterdam apartment. He told them he would let them stay at his place on one condition: they would have to act in a ‘friend’s short film’. They were more than excited about the prospect. When Martin told me about his deal, my response was "That's awesome, but who's this friend? And which film?". Apparently it was me.
I happily took on the challenge and wrote the outline to the story on the one hour train ride to Amsterdam to go shoot the film. Both Natalia and Fernando got the gist of the story immediately, and since I didn't speak a word of Spanish, I trusted them and had them improvise all the dialogues. Three hours later, we had wrapped and were at the nearest bar celebrating. What the film may lack in preparation and crew and rehearsals, was made up with the wonderful actors and a creative spirit to just go and make the film in the spontaneity of the moment. Something I will always carry with me.
